The Telluride Transfer Warehouse
In my role as Executive Director at Telluride Arts, I helped convene an extraordinary team to purchase, design, activate, and stabilize the Telluride Transfer Warehouse, an iconic National Historic Landmark in the heart of Telluride, Colorado, that was locked, roofless, and left to crumble for almost 50 years.
Working with local and national partners, including the Town of Telluride, San Miguel County, Colorado Creative Industries, Colorado State Historic Preservation, ArtSpace, The National Endowment for the Arts, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and many others, including small and large donations of all kinds, we ensured the building would be stabilized, adhere to preservation standards, and be reimagined by the community as a local cultural hub.
In May of 2024, after 10 years in progress, which included rigorous community input, the global pandemic, a redesign, a year of appeals, two lawsuits, a significant cost increase, and thousands of community events held in the magnificent open-air ruin, we secured a building permit and commenced construction for a stabilization phase that was completed in the fall of 2024.
